Authentic Israeli Krav Maga in Boston, Massachusetts
Below is a description and schedule of our classes. If you are planning to attend a Krav Maga class for the first time please click here to book your place online.
Not all classes are suitable for beginners, even if they have experience(s) in another martial art. Our system is a belted/graded system and we teach our classes following a syllabus. It is not necessarily that an intermediate or advanced class is significantly more technical, rather that those students have covered material previously, which allows the material/techniques to be studied within context and against an already understood background.
Students typically find themselves being graded for Yellow Belt after 3 months of attendance (training two to three times a week) and Orange after a further 9 months. If we see a student with a particular talent or who possesses a previous background we will on occasion speed this process up. This is at the instructor team's discretion and is not a privilege to be requested.
Unlike many Krav Maga schools we teach gun and knife work from day one. We believe in introducing these skills early on rather than treating them as something that a student has to wait to learn as some form of reward for sticking with the system.
From Orange Belt onwards students at these grades and belts train together. Once fundamental techniques are learnt there is little reason for the grades to train separately. The importance of the White and Yellow Belt classes is to develop fundamental fighting skills, such as: control of range, distance, effective movement, the ability to break a fall etc, so that sparring and throwing can be introduced safely.
Although most of the intermediate and advanced techniques are no more complicated than those taught at White and Yellow Belt, the scenarios and situations in which they are experienced are. Greater physical skills and decision making processes are required to deal with these successfully, and this is where the focus on a student's development and progression is placed.
We pride ourselves on having a physically fit instructor team, who are able to participate in classes and meet the physical demands of them. Our instructors train with the students whenever possible e.g. if there is an odd number of students and partner work is required, if we do "Ruck Runs" (running with weighted packs) etc. We are certainly not a school where the instructor(s) is not required to participate in the hard work. This is because we truly value and understand the importance of physical fitness in equipping a person to handle real life violence.
Violence never occurs in a vacuum; there are always situational components present. How you handle violence within your home will differ to that, which is experienced in a pub/bar or that which occurs in a subway/underpass.
Until you train in a manner, which acknowledges this and incorporates it into your training, you will never be realistically training for reality. By looking at the dynamics at play in a variety of situations and considering how various responses maybe appropriate or inappropriate it is possible to get a realistic understanding of how and when to behave in aggressive/violent situations.
This is the type of training, which bridges the gap between the theory and the reality of violence.
We also train third party/close protection skills during these classes, teaching you how to not only defend yourself but defend others as well. We have covered "improvised weapons", escalating force, control and restraint etc as part of these classes. Each week we teach a different component.
Being able to throw and fight on the ground are fundamental self-defense skills and yet they are rarely developed. In our school we dedicate one class a week to the development of these skills. Head Instructor, Gershon Ben Keren holds a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Judo and a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Dennis Survival Ju-Jitsu, a system taught to elite units in the Israeli Military.
It is always good to learn new things but it is more important to practice that which is already known: one technique practiced 1000 times is far more effective that 1000 practiced once. Our open mats sessions allow students to practice with others, whilst our instructors are available to teach, help out and instruct where necessary. The emphasis in these sessions is on practice time rather than "learning".
