Barro Colorado Island (BCI) sits in the middle of the Panama Canal and has been a biological reserve since 1923, continuously monitored by resident biologists for almost 90 years. The island was created/formed when the Chagres River was damned in order to create Gatun Lake, which is part of the Panama Canal. It was an island with no apex-predator, with various species of monkeys and sloths, living their lives without having to consider safety. Animals who largely lived without fear. This changed in 1999, when two Harpy Eagles were released onto the island. The idea behind this was to preserve a dying ecosystem e.g., the monkey population(s) was so numerous that almost all seedlings that the trees dropped were eaten, resulting in few new trees growing etc. The Smithsonian Institute responsible for this reversed its decision to do this in less than a year, due to the “unethical” stress it placed upon animals that had once lived in peace. In this article I want to examine several things that occurred due to the introduction of a predator, in an otherwise peaceful environment and some of the lessons that this can teach us about human fear and behavior.

       Perhaps one of the most important lessons from this “experiment” is that fear doesn't need/require genetic pre-programming to snap into place fast. One of the most striking things about the howler monkeys’ reaction to the introduction of the eagles is that no living monkey, and likely no monkey for many generations, had ever encountered a harpy eagle, yet the population developed a specific, correctly-targeted alarm response within months. This tells/informs us that the "software" used for developing “fear responses” is often more general-purpose than we might assume i.e., animals/mammals have an underlying capacity to detect novel threat cues and then rapidly wire them in order to form defensive behaviors, rather than hard-coded responses that are related to one specific predator.

       Humans share this same architecture. We're not born afraid of cars, guns, or electrical outlets, but we acquire robust, fast, durable fear responses to them after surprisingly little exposure; sometimes even after a single bad experience, sometimes just from watching someone else react fearfully. Social/observational transmission is often faster than direct experience i.e., classic primate research (Susan Mineka's work with lab-reared rhesus monkeys and snakes) found that monkeys who'd never seen a snake could acquire a lasting fear of snakes just by watching a video of another monkey reacting fearfully to one but couldn't acquire the same fear watching a doctored video of a monkey reacting fearfully to a flower. This is known/referred to as "prepared learning", with some associations being easier for the nervous system to form than others, likely because they were adaptively relevant during our species evolution.

       It is also worth noting that such responses can outlast the actual threat. The island’s howler monkeys kept their alarm response to harpy calls for months after the eagles were removed from the island. In humans, this maps onto a well-documented feature of fear conditioning i.e., that once a fear association is formed, it tends to be sticky and resistant to fading, even once the danger is gone, which is part of why anxiety disorders and phobias can persist long after the triggering circumstances have changed. Extinguishing a learned fear generally takes active, repeated safe exposure, not just time or the removal of the threat. This is one of the reasons that after we have a bad experience, we over-react to future ones, which may in some way resemble the original one, but are in fact benign. If we go back to Susan Mineka's work/research we can see that we don’t even have to have had an “actual” experience, just visualizing someone else have one (not even in person) can educate our fear system. This is why “regulating” our responses to news media is so important and can help explain why we are so susceptible to creating “folk devils” and “moral panics”.

       Another observation from the experiment is that specificity matters, i.e., the monkeys didn't become generally fearful, they became fearful of something specific.
The howler monkeys responded specifically to harpy calls and not to other bird vocalizations. This is consistent with what's called "fear generalization" research in humans e.g., after a threatening experience, some people's fear stays narrowly targeted to the actual cue, whilst others (a much smaller group) generalize broadly to similar-sounding or similar-looking things (a hallmark of more severe anxiety and PTSD presentations). The tight specificity in the monkeys is closer to healthy, adaptive fear learning i.e., it protects against the real danger without shutting down normal function concerning everything else. As conscious beings we should recognize this, and help educate ourselves, after we have experienced a traumatic event; we don’t have to “learn” to fear everything, just that we’ve experienced.

       In saying all of this there is a caution that’s worth noting. It's important to be careful concerning this analogy i.e., howler monkeys and humans diverge in a lot of ways (our fear responses are shaped heavily by language, culture, and abstract reasoning about future/hypothetical threats, which a monkey's isn't). But the deep architecture e.g., rapid threat-detection learning, social transmission of fear, persistence after the threat is gone, and specificity vs. generalization etc., really does appear to be a shared evolutionary toolkit across primates, with humans included. That's part of why this kind of "natural experiment" research is valuable, i.e., it's much harder to ethically test rapid fear acquisition to a truly novel threat in humans, so animal studies like this one are one of the few windows into how that process unfolds from scratch. From an ethical perspective, it’s also worth noting that this was why the “experiment” ended and wouldn’t be allowed today; when monkeys start realizing that if they stayed close to human observers/researches the Harpy Eagles wouldn’t harm them (much like bullied children stay close to teachers), you know that you’ve impacted their lives/existence in a harmful way.
