Improvised & Tactical Weapons Seminar (Sunday 4th January 10:00 - 11:30 AM)
This seminar is for adults aged 18+ of any experience level.
This 90-minute seminar provides practical training in identifying and using improvised weapons, alongside two key tactical tools: the tactical pen and the tactical flashlight. True improvised weapons are everyday objects already in your environment or on your person that, in the moment, can give you a strategic advantage over an aggressor. Tactical weapons, by contrast, are ordinary items such as pens or flashlights whose primary purpose is not violence but function. Because these tools serve legitimate, non-violent roles, they are generally seen as more legally appropriate in self-defense situations than knives or firearms. The seminar also covers what to look for when purchasing such items to strengthen a self-defense claim if you ever need to use them.
This is a hands-on seminar, taught in a compliant, partner-based format. Instruction is led by Gershon Ben Keren, a 5th Degree Black Belt in Krav Maga, who uses the Krav Maga methodology for identifying and applying improvised weapons—a topic he explored extensively in his first book, “Krav Maga – Real World Solutions to Real World Violence.” Gershon will also draw on his first-hand experiences using improvised objects for self-protection, a critical skill set when dealing with edged or blunt weapons such as knives, sticks, and impact tools. In these scenarios, the intelligent use of improvised or tactical weapons can significantly “level the playing field” and improve survival outcomes.
Violence never occurs in a vacuum, and any advantage you can create is one worth taking. Knowing how to use objects and elements of your environment to increase your survival chances is an essential and often overlooked self-defense skill. This seminar teaches a simple, functional system for rapidly identifying useful objects and understanding how their properties dictate their application in real-world violence—especially when facing a committed, aggressive attacker.
Drawing on more than three decades working in the security industry, and his academic work as a criminologist, Gershon Ben Keren brings both practical expertise and evidence-based insight to the topic of violence. The scenarios addressed in this seminar come not from media portrayals or hypothetical situations, but from real-life cases and actual violent encounters. For anyone looking to fast-track their self-defense or fighting abilities, learning how to effectively use improvised and tactical weapons is one of the most direct and practical ways to do so.
This is a physical, hands-on seminar suitable for men and women aged 18+. It takes place at the location listed below, with free on-site parking, and is open to both members and non-members of the school.
