Improvised & Tactical Weapons Seminar (Sunday 4th January, 2026 10:00 - 11:30 AM)
This seminar is for adults aged 18+ of any experience level.
This 90-minute seminar looks at how to identify and use improvised weapons along with two tactical weapons (tactical pen and tactical flashlight). True improvised weapons are those things/items in the environment, or that you have on you, that can be identified in the moment as something that would give you a strategic advantage over an aggressor. “Tactical weapons” are everyday items which have a primary purpose such as being a pen or a flashlight that can also be used as a “weapon” for self-defense purposes. Unlike a knife or gun, whose primary purpose is to be used as a weapon, tactical weapons have non-violent aspects to them i.e., they function as tools in other capacities, making them “more” legally appropriate/justified to use in self-defense scenarios – the seminar will also cover considerations that should be made when purchasing such items to strengthen a claim of self-defense if they have to be used.
This is a hands-on class/seminar which will involve working with partners in a compliant manner. The seminar will be taught by Gershon Ben Keren, a 5th Degree Black Belt in Krav Maga, who will use the Krav Maga methodology/approach for identifying and using improvised weapons; something he discussed in his first book, “Krav Maga – Real World Solutions to Real World Violence”. He will also bring his own first-hand experiences of using improvised weapons for self-defense; something which can be extremely important when dealing with edged and blunt weapons e.g., knives and sticks etc. The use of improvised and tactical weapons in these contexts is extremely important for “levelling the playing field” and increasing survival chances etc.
When dealing with violence any advantage is one you should take and knowing how to use objects and the environment to increase your survival chances is an essential skill to have. Violence doesn’t happen in a vacuum and being able to utilize objects around you and that you have on you, can be the difference between success and failure, especially when dealing with a committed/aggressive attacker. Understanding a simple system of identification of objects which dictate how they should be used is an important skill to have.
As well as having the experience of working in the security industry since 1990, as a criminologist Gershon Ben Keren brings an academic and evidence-based approach to dealing with violence. The scenarios that will be worked through in this seminar aren’t just based on his own experiences or on media-inspired scenarios, but on real-life incidents and events. If you are looking to “fast-track” your self-defense/fighting abilities learning how to use objects and items for self-defense is an appropriate way to do so.
This is a hands-on, physical class which is suitable for men and women ages 18+. The seminar takes place at the location below (there is free on-site parking) and is open to non-members of the school as well as members.
